The story behind Palazzo Sangiorgio in Catania
The Sangiorgio family
from the countryside of Adrano to luxury hospitality
The story of Nino Sangiorgio is one of a visionary entrepreneur deeply in love with his homeland, whose vision led to the restoration of the noble palace that now bears his name and represents a renaissance for Catania and its centre, having become one of the city’s 5-star hotels.
Born in Adrano, in the province of Catania, to a farmer father and housewife mother, hard work has always been a family rule, shaping his self-made man personality. After three years as immigrants in Belgium, Nino and his family returned to Sicily in the early 1980s. Here, Nino engaged in various jobs, from window making to orange picking, carpentry, and eventually became a builder.
The first house where he tested his building skills, at just 23 years old, was the new family home gifted to him and his wife by his father-in-law. From that beginning, towards the end of the 1980s, his first company, Sapim, was established in Piano Tavola.

A story of rebirth
Palazzo Sangiorgio, ancient elegance and charm brought back to life in the city
In 2020, he discovered Palazzo Hernandez in Catania, the remnant of what must have once been an architectural jewel. Despite its ruins, bomb-damaged roofs from World War II, and the degradation resulting from various illicit uses over time, Nino Sangiorgio recognised its hidden potential and made it shine again.
Where others chose to look away, Nino focused his gaze, envisioning a bright future of elegance and ancient charm brought to life for himself and the city, thanks to the project by renowned architects Michele and Solaria Sclafani.
